“THE COMPETITIVE PARENT”
New book offers a kinder way to coach football successfully

ARMONK, New York – Getting a great performance from young athletes isn’t difficult, according to Christopher Tateo, author of the award-winning book “The Competitive Parent.” But motivating young football players ages 5 to 12 years old to perform their best “does not involve screaming, yelling, or degrading, “ the author said.

“Youth football has taken a black eye over the years,” said Tateo, who has 10 years of youth football coaching experience. “Parents and coaches have been charging America’s fields for years, carrying on in a hostile manner, and supporting their child as if they were going to sign a million dollar contract.”

The 102 page book details the problems that exist in youth football leagues today, including: “win-at-all-costs” environment, parents who use their volunteer coach position to try to “propel their own children to stardom,” and parents who live through their children’s sports success. Solutions to these and other problems are clearly described on every page.

The author provides an outline of three keys to winning football games that provides an advantage in every game.

“I wrote this book to give coaches and parents a new perspective of how they can create a stress free youth football environment, said Tateo. “When used correctly, the innovative techniques in this book can help readers manage players, motivate players, organize practice sessions, and deal with the intangibles surrounding the youth football experience.

The book helps youth teams win, without harming children.

“Kids five to 12 years-old are very fragile emotionally as well and as physically,” said Tateo. “This is what separates youth football from other levels of coaching: these are young players taking baby steps into organized football.

An excerpt from the book:

“My glory days may be over, but my heart still lives for football. I apply the same energy to coaching that I did to playing. I’m presently coaching my old childhood football team-the same one that I once learned very little enduring the screaming and yelling of my old coach. From those old youth-football days, I still carry with me a philosophy that I gained as a kid struggling to understand football: told myself back then that if the coach would only show us more compassion and patience, we would probably learn more about the game.
